foundrae x auboeck “snake” ring bearer / medallion holder

2023

The word “vertu” is the love of or taste for collectible objects or fine objects of art. The Snake Bedside Necklace Stand was hand sculpted in New York and then hand-cast from solid brass by the Werkstatte Carl Auböck. The Werkstatte Carl Auböck has been operating in the same studio since 1908 in Vienna, Austria and their piece have earned cult status among collectors.

First collaborating in 2021 with our classic snake bookends, Beth and Carl were inspired by Beth's love for antique pocket watch stands. These multipurpose stands serve as a sculpture but with a singular utilitarian purpose. They were typically placed bedside so that way a person’s pocket watch was visible at a glance, didn’t get misplaced, and stayed safe and clean. They were inspired to create their own bedside stand for necklaces for the same purpose. Useful, beautiful, meaningful and storied; Just the kind of thing to rest your eyes on as you drift off to sleep.

Each piece is hand-cast from solid brass using the same traditional “lost wax” method of casting that FoundRae utilizes; making one piece at a time.

the foundrae x auboeck medallion holder is a playful development of the snake bookends which were launched in 2021. we are proud of yet another collaboration with beth hudgens / the foundrae team who visualized this object to hold their beautifully crafted jewelry.

SAGAN x auboeck incense holder

2023

“at SAGAN Vienna studio, we believe that the tools and objects we use in our design process play a crucial role in shaping routines. every object is part of an atmosphere of daily rituals and helps us to visualize and materialize our ideas. our favorite sharp scissors, the drawing pencils in different shades and sizes, the heavy punching machine, leather swatches, incense sticks and the carl auböck hand. this paperweight holds the stack of paper and books together at the studio desk and gave us the idea for a new collaboration.

we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to work again with mr. carl auböck, to meet in the workshop and to develop together a new version of the iconic hand object. it is a reminder of the timeless design principles of walter gropius, who had the hand object as a paperweight on his working table at bauhaus. by adding a simple hole, we transformed this object into an incense holder almost without changing its form. continuing to explore the heritage of design and craft, we spent time in auböck's workshop and archive in vienna. the timeless objects that we love to discover there together with the everyday functional objects from our studio served as inspiration to create the “hand incense holder”. the result follows once more the SAGAN Vienna credo; familiar done differently. developed in collaboration with renowned workshop carl auböck, this piece combines functionality and simplicity. the hand incense holder is crafted from 100% polished brass and bears the iconic punch mark of the carl auböck and SAGAN vienna, ensuring the highest quality and exclusivity.”

the #4154 “hand” incense holder is a playful development of the timeless auboeck “hand” paperweight. in this collaboration, function and form play together to hold a fragrant incense stick in the most graceful way. we are proud of this collaboration with SAGAN Vienna who captured the potential of this object in a very particular way.

SAGAN x auboeck keyring

2021

“the key holder collection is featuring a collaboration with the traditional metal workshop carl auböck in vienna, austria. SAGAN Vienna team visited their archive to take out one of many beautiful brass pieces and to give the key holder a new twist. in the archive we noticed that in the past the workshop has been combining cow horn elements with brass. the square, the sphere and carl auböck's signature hand element is now reinterpreted in cow horn and assembled on the brass key chain. we created unique pieces produced in one city, vienna. all horn elements are handmade by Petz Hornmanufaktur.”

#4273-3 XL auboeck sculpture “foot” & custom door handles

2021

“Birkenstock 1774” - a dedicated space for the brand to present special projects and collaborations.

this vibrant collaboration between the fashion brand birkenstock, designer nick vinson and werkstaette carl auboeck was brought to live by SIGMAR LONDON. a new show room was built in a classic parisian apartment in the heart of paris where the birkenstock collection was displayed in living room style spaces. signature door plates, inspired by the iconic birkenstock soles were designed in the workshop. the door plates are made from cast brass with a high polished finish. to match these custom door objects and inspired by the brand, the iconic foot sculpture by the werkstaette was brought to a new level by scaling it up by hand and creating an iconic foot sculpture to celebrate the brands identity.

Aldo Bakker “Moustache” Ashtray

2021

it was an honor working with designer aldo Bakker who required utmost precision in machining this (ash) tray out of solid brass. the designs section looks like a moustache.

during the pandemic crisis the required brass material in at least 120mmm diameter that could be worked on a high precision 4 axis digital cnc lathe had to be hunted down as oversee connections were hardly working. in the end we succeeded, also following aldo’s high aiming requirements of grinding and polishing each piece. the finish was achieved by hand on our 1930ties 3.5 k rpm machine to achieve the highest gloss and quietness of material.

Lee West x Auboeck Collection of Table
Top Objects

watering can , tablelamp, mirror boxes ,
bottleopener , ballpoint pen many more

2019

lee arrived here in the bernardgasse on the rainiest day of the year, unannounced. he didn’t know where to ring so he used the heavy brass rings on our entrance doors to make himself heard..as the brass on brass noise was ringing all through the house i opened this door and we met for the first time. he wanted to start a collaboration in his own collection that was partly already created - some of the pieces were just ideas to this point. through to the strong design and his talent promoting his work in the right channels, lee's collection was an instant success. very soon, the objects were in high demand and we produced it and shipped it worldwide.

FoundRae x Carl Auboeck
“snake bookends”

2021

“in collaboration with carl auboeck, these limited edition snake bookends were inspired by the snake bookends rings and the extensive library at the FoundRae flagship. they hold your books upright and the snakes wrap around the spines, so they are visible and beautiful from all angles. each piece is hand-cast from solid brass using the same traditional “lost wax” method of casting that FoundRae utilizes; making one piece at a time.”

in this inspiring collaboration, jewelry design played together with traditional craftsmanship and it was a pleasure working with beth and her team, transforming her ideas into brass.

“oh” Jakob Lena Knebl / MUMOK

2017

for the 2017 exhibition of jakob lena knebl, curated by barbara rüdiger and susanne neuburger, objects by the werkstaette were shown amongst pieces of other artists to emphasize the art work.

presslink: https://www.mumok.at/de/events/oh

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakob_Lena_Knebl

this exhibition showed a room-sized installation characteristic of her, in which identity constructions, desire, and sensual experience play a major role. in addition, the artist appeared as an avatar in a digital, interactive installation in which artworks become actors. the visitors could follow and participate in the course of action. on the second level available to her, living landscapes familiar from fairs and exhibitions were interwoven with the works of the collection in such a way that the fields of art, design and fashion constantly exchange their positions. moments of clarity alternate with uncertainty about the function and classification of the objects presented.

Philip Johnson / The Glasshouse x carl auboeck

philip johnson glasshouse “modernist” paperweight / glasshouse keychain / “stairs” bookends

2016 / 2020 / 2023

the GH contacted us and we were breaking our heads about what in the world can ever succeed in matching the high standard philip johnson followed in his work and also in his own life. one thing I always liked in his elegant appearance..either in shorts or in three piece suit he always wore the PJ version of the le corbusier heavy and round rimmed frames, symbol of the modernist architect.. so we produced one in brass, either high gloss polished or darkly, near black patinated version – slightly too heavy to wear it - is a very significant object for the desk .

we had the honor of designing life-sized philip johnson paperweight spectacles, xclusively for the glass house. made of cast brass; available in polished and patina finish.

available via the glasshouse design store https://designstore.theglasshouse.org/featured-c38.aspx

https://theglasshouse.org / https://designstore.theglasshouse.org/the-modernist-paperweight-glass-house-exclusive-by-carl-aubock-p375.aspx

the second collaboration was a keyring in the dimension and proportion of the original glass house  - for many days I could not find a solution for the piece it should be hung to, the connector to the keyring itself – ends didn’t meet somehow.. but … one day riding the motorcycle through the vienna woods in spring - best way to give birth to solutions and ideas - i found a solution to combine keyring and keys and the tiny brass glass house - a customized ring was anchored in the round bath cell of the tiny house – press and turn out and keys can be removed or loaded.

for the glass houses´ 70th anniversary, a custom keychain miniature of the iconic architectural building was made from solid brass. true to the nature of every auboeck piece, this piece has a very unique character and is a tribute to the iconic architecture of the philip johnson glasshouse.

https://designstore.theglasshouse.org/the-glass-house-keychain-carl-aubock-p433.aspx

the third collaboration, the “stairs” object was created after intensive conversations with dominica baharian from the PJsGH and studying the stairs of the sculpture gallery on the original GH premises. a pair of heavy left and right L shaped stairs were made. the full brass casts are heavily patinated - the edges of the stairs highlighted by handfile.

Jaqueline Rabun x Carl Auböck “Nesting Egg”

2017

the three nesting eggs by the acclaimed jewellery designer jacqueline rabun are an “introverted response” to the current world affairs (2017). the idea was based around the shift in society and something still very much relevant in today’s sphere.

the sand-cast solid brass eggs also double as sinuously rimmed boxes. lifting the top shell away reveals the dark contrasting patinated interior. the curvature is as strongly defined through the interior as the external egg-shape.

the trilogy was born from a collaboration between jacqueline rabun and carl auböck for the wallpaper* handmade exhibition, milan 2017. both rabun and the auböck werkstätte share common appreciation for the humble ‘egg’, the brass egg paperweight by auböck II graced the desk of the german architect walter gropius who founded the bauhaus school and remains a shining example of the werkstätte’s craft. jacqueline has used the symbolism in her jewellery design, conveying birth, life and the relationship between mother and child.

the egg is punch marked with the “auboeck” punch mark and numbered '3' (both top and bottom shell).

Petar Petrov x Auboeck “Alpha” Handbag

2016

mr petrovs main idea was initially to introduce the (auböck) hand into his different handbag designs. the iconic hand was slit in the wrist to be mounted on the bags flap and fitted in the palm with a round magnet that held the flap in place with a hidden slim mintlike iron counterpiece  - a collection of different (auböck) hands/bags followed.

it was a pleasure working with mr. petrov and seeing the auboeck hand being introduced to fashion and streetstyle.

michael anastassiades x carl auboeck “ITALIC” pepper mill / coffee grinder

Coffee Mill 2017 – Pepper Mill 2014

michael and i met when he attended the opening of his  MAK / vienna exhibition in the geymüller schlössel. next day he followed my invitation to our workshop and presented me with his idea. supported by nina hertig, our UK representative – it was not more than the gesture describing size and slant and the remark  “..no mounting screws visible outside please..”. planning and  prototypes were well received and production went successfully over many years. the pepper mill was produced in nickel matte, patina, polished and filed surface finishing.

two years later together we developed a coffeemill, milled out of solid brass and copper. we used solid rod material used for lightning rod grounding. the head of the mill contained a set of gears as the handle of the mill was allowed only max 1.5 cm outward the focus/axis of the mills body. the coffee mill comes in high gloss brass or copper finishing.
